The new City Hall of Belo Horizonte is a unique building, a sure sign, a landmark in a city in rapid growth projected into the future. Its strategic position at the conclusion of the main axis of the city (Avenida Afonso Pena) and the edge between the regular grid of the “planned city” and disorderly neighborhoods outside the Avenida do Contorno, challenge the building to the role of border and at the same time of fulcrum. What is now a complex infrastructure hub bent to the functional logic of the automobile movement, is instead an architectural and spatial resolution: a powerful gesture and officer in the city, a generous and flexibile space for everyday use.
